Jalan Kuching Traffic

This morning the traffic at Jalan Kuching was terrible. At first I thought there might be some rally or something is happening in the City center, or maybe a massive accident. But as we inched further, roadwork contractor are still doing their work at 7 am, closing two lanes out of four, while everybody was rushing to work. What made it worst was that almost every Muslims during this fasting month are coming early to work so that they can leave early.

Why are they still working at peak hours, DBKL must make a rule and ensure that all contractors must clear their roadwork by 6am to avoid inconveniencing motorists coming to work.

Furthermore, i observed that the rules for heavy vehicles at Jalan Kuching are not properly observed. Several heavy vehicles just drive on without any enforcement authority stopping them.

Heavy Vehicles are not allowed to ply jalan Kuching between 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm. to avoid clash of traffic between heavy and smaller vehicles. The rules was introduced probably more than 20 years ago when Jalan Kuching was upgraded. Over the years office hours had changed several times especially during the evening. Governments office first shifts ends at 4.30pm while second shifts at 5pm. Banks and corporate companies office hours ends at 5.45 while several companies at 5.30pm and some as late as 6pm.

Thus, the rules for Heavy Vehicles plying Jalan Kuching should be revised from 4pm-6pm to 4.30pm-7pm to avoid any untoward incidents on smaller vehicles especially motorcycles.

It is timely for DBKL or any authority to look into this before any mishap.
